Travis was discharged from the hospital today. His fever went away during the night, although he didn't get a great night's sleep. The nurse noticed during a routine IV flush during the night, that T's IV wasn't flushing properly. Unfortunately, this meant he needed another IV (he got fluids in the ER only and antibiotics daily through the IV). Travis had labs scheduled for the morning, so they placed a new IV when they came for the blood draw. He was not thrilled about a second IV, and after many tears he was finally able to get some restful sleep for a few hours. I don't think the nurses and doctors checking him during the morning rounds bothered him at this point.
His fever stayed away until tonight, but it's not nearly as high as before. The docs told me that temps usually go up during the evening and to expect that over the next few days. As long as they are trending down, it's OK. Dr. Swensen, his pediatrician, checked him over and felt that T would be able to come home this afternoon as long as he was doing good. They gave him the last dose of IV antibiotic, Rocephin, around 1p and he fell sound asleep right after the dose. He had several hours of good sleep while they were doing his discharge orders.
Scott, Nolan, and Barrett came to visit this morning and all the boys found cool things to do from the kids cart. Travis enjoyed playing with cars and the spiral raceway they brought in today. He didn't want to leave the hospital when it was time to go home; he had toys and whatever food and drink he wanted. He was crying when we left "I'm still sick, I need to see a doctor". It's amazing how children's hospitals make the stays so much better for the kids.
Travis' white blood cell count was lower than last Friday's, but all the doctors felt Travis would be well-covered by all the antibiotics he's on. All the virus cultures came back negative, they test for 10 main ones, so it looks like they are on the right track treating him with antibiotics. He'll be around the house for several days, and we decided that he can miss Pre-K this week as a precaution.
We are to call Travis' pediatrician's office Monday morning to check in, earlier if needed. They will re-check his blood counts again at some point in time. Currently, he's having fun watching cars movies and playing with cars at home. He ate a good brinner (breakfast for dinner) and not too much of a fever tonight.
Thank you for all your thoughts, prayers and support.
I'm loving that he's home and well enough to want to stay at the hospital and play.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear he's home and doing better. It is really amazing how much easier they can make it on the kids. Sara says she doesn't see doctors at the hospital, they're her hospital friends. I think since they don't look like doctors, she just doesn't see them that way.
ReplyDeleteCall me if you need anything, but sounds like you are all doing great. I'm glad this was a short trip.
And lastly, Happy Birthday Barrett!! We hope your day is a great as you are! :)
