Unfortunately, the computer system at Shriners today was having some issues. The PA Travis sees couldn't bring up his other x-rays or notes to see if there was something when we were there 3 weeks ago that could have indicated this added component. At this point, we're thinking that Travis' injury was more complicated/serious than originally thought. Then you add in the component that the bones in people with NF generally don't heal like the rest of the population, they have a harder/longer time to completely heal and sometimes not at all.
However, this 2nd area must have been very subtle since it wasn't picked up on 2 sets of x-rays at 2 great facilities. I know that T's docs at Shriners will be looking over his x-rays again to see if there is anything that they can learn, and probably conferring with his geneticists. Thank God we were in Salt Lake City when this happened since we'll be back at Shriners more often for a while. God knew Travis' NF and bone issues and He put us in the place to get T the best medical care when the bigger issues happened. To have this subtle of an injury take on this form, there was probably a weakness in there and it would have happened at some point in time.
With that being said, it is VERY encouraging that there is healing happening. The docs at Shriners are happy to see the healing (IF it was not healing, there would be an increased risk of the fracture becoming a complete break). Again, it's healing. We got to meet the Chief today and he's also wonderful. It was decided that Travis needed to be put into a cast again to protect his leg. While Travis wasn't happy about having a cast back on, he did great.
Another positive note is that Travis tolerated the exam very, very well. When we were there 3 weeks ago, he was still very sore and didn't want the medical team looking at his leg. Today, Travis held very still when the x-ray tech positioned his leg to get the x-ray and didn't resist when she needed to place/turn his leg to get the images. Since T wasn't so tender and sore, the PA Travis sees was also able to get T's leg in a position in the cast that the PA liked better.
Where we go from here...Travis will go back to see his team at Shriners on Aug 3rd, 4 weeks from today. They will take off that cast and see how things are healing. Below are some pictures from today's visit.

You can see the unexpected "bump" on Travis' left tibia, about 1/4 the way down from his knee. Picture taken shortly after his blue cast was removed. |

Travis enjoyed having his leg out of the cast and loved the lotion that the nurse put on his leg. Before we knew he needed another cast. |
