Fractured Femur and Cheyenne Frontier Days

It's been a whirlwind of a week with medical phone calls and our trip back to Cheyenne for Frontier Days.  The MRI report for Travis' lower extremity (legs) stated that there was a possible fracture on Travis' left femur.  Travis' pediatrician in SLC kept us informed on T's MRI results (still waiting for the brain MRI report) since T's geneticist was out of town for a while when the results came in.  T's pediatrician talked with the radiologist to get more information about the femur fracture that we could then pass along to Travis' orthopedists at Shriners.

Travis more than likely has an insufficiency fracture of his left femur around where the femur flares out near the top of the knee.  As explained by T's pediatrician, an insufficiency fracture is similar to a stress fracture, but is not a stress fracture.  Travis left femur and tibia are inherently weak due to the plexiform and NF, so the femur bone was "not sufficient" when compared to "normal" bones.  We spoke with T's pediatrician Tuesday morning and he was able to go over the femur info with us.

We called Travis' orthopedists at Shriners to let them know about femur fracture on the routine MRI to see if anything needed to be done regarding the femur and if it was ok for Travis to travel to Cheyenne for Frontier Days.  T's orthopedic PA, the guy T mainly sees at Shriners, called us back and was able to answer our questions concerning the fracture.  He felt that Travis would be ok to travel to Cheyenne for Frontier Days.  We had to be careful of what Travis did, think no twisty/extra spiny carnival rides that would put further forces on his legs.

The PA also felt that Travis was past the critical time of being careful on his leg and that T is standing and cruising around furniture playing is a good sign that it is ok.  Bearing weight on the leg will help the fracture heal and the PA didn't want to immobilize Travis more.  He checked T's prior x-rays at Shriners and didn't see a fracture.  He was going to get a copy of T's MRI from Primary Children's and would call us back if he saw anything significant, different than what he expected.  We did not hear back from Shriners, so that is very good.  :)

We had a great time back in Cheyenne seeing friends and attending many Frontier Days events.  We were able to visit with quite a few friends and saw others during Frontier Days events.  We took in the Thunderbirds Air Show from LCCC, we hadn't watched the show there before and that was very amazing to see up close.  We met with friends at the carnival on several different days and Travis had fun riding rides.

We also made it to a parade, rodeo, pancake breakfast (Travis ate all 3 of his pancakes!), and one of the main reasons for going...Zac Brown Band concert.  We also were able to spend time visiting friends at their houses where the kids could play with their friends.  Travis got many more signatures on his cast and one random guy in line when we bought rodeo tickets gave him a $1 for being so brave.  Ummm...I think he knows how to work the system when you have a cast.  ;)

We are still waiting for brain MRI results.  I'm guessing we will hear this week since T's geneticist will be back sometime this week.  Travis sees his orthopedists at Shriners on Wednesday.  Hopefully when the cast comes off this time, T will be healed enough to not need another cast.  Thank you for your prayers and support.  It was great to have some fun family time and time with our friends in Cheyenne.
